It is tolerant of most soil types. but sensitive to poorly-drained soils. It tolerates full sun to partial shade. This plant is good for preventing erosion in disturbed sites.

Fragrant sumac produces vibrant fall foliage. As the name suggest, the leaves have a lemony scent. It produces red berries in the late summer which are an attractive food source for wildlife.
